Most of the products we consume are causing environmental problems due to their process of manufacturing. I chose nail polish because everyone consumes nail polish and the way it gets distributed to the U.S.A is bad. I consider distribution to be one of the biggest problems affecting our environment. This is because all the transportation that is used releases carbon dioxide. To solve this problem we can buy nail polish that is made in the U.S.A. OPI Nail Polish is an American made nail polish and its one of the most popular sold. This nail polish has over 200 different shades and each color of nail polish is like "the" color of the season. They have created colors for specific charity organizations such as American Heart Association, American Red Cross and for Breast Cancer. They make sure that they only sell this nail polish in salons that have good reputations (reputable). This nail polish isn't as bad as the other ones but we still have to watch how much we consume because this nail polish still gets distributed to other countries and cities and then there goes our environment get polluted.
Another biggest problem that I feel that affects our environment is the production process of nail polish. Nail polish goes through this big process with all these chemicals and they get mixed together. They mix many solvents together to hold the coloring and other substances and after that they have to be able to evaporate. They mix the pigments with nitrocellulose and plasticizer using a speed mill. Once it is properly milled it is removed from the mill and broken up into small pieces and is ready to be mixed with other solvents. They then mix it in a stainless steel kettle and the reason why they mix it in there is because the nitrocellulose is really reactive to iron. They then cool down the mixture by circulating cold water outside of the kettle. That temperature is controlled by computers and technicians. It is performed in a special room to control the hazards of fire and explosions. Materials are mixed in computerized closed kettles and is cooled down before other materials such as perfumes and moisturizers. It is then pumped into 55 small gallon drums, trucked to a production line. It is pumped into explosion proof pumps, packed and shipped out to different states put on the shelves and ready to be sold for the retail market. This is bad because it such a long and dangerous process. The people have to be there and on check if the machines don't break down and they have to be able to control them. They are not as protected as I thought they would be and it's dangerous because they have to check that nothing blows up or catches on fire.
